Insomnia Alcohol

Question: Is alcohol and insomnia linked?I work 50-60 hours a week and drink wine almost every night after working 10-11 hours. Sometimes I'll drink so much wine to help me finally pass out but then I sleep it off for a couple of hours and then I'm up again! I drink wine to for the sole purpose of relaxing and for me to go to bed but I still don't sleep well. What do you think?

Answer: Wine contains a lot of sugar (that's where the alcohol comes from) at first the alcohol relaxes you, then the sugar kicks in and you become overactive. You shouldn't use wine to sleep. A glass will relax you but too much will keep you awake. If you really can't sleep, try camomile tea or go to the chemist and get some valerian (herb) and if that still doesn't help see your doctor. You might need something to help you get to sleep and get you into the right pattern again, then you should be ok. As for the wine...it's nice to drink but you will pay for it later by being wide awake, as you already said.
