Question: Insomnia, how do I help end it?As of lately, I've been having terrible insomnia. I've been awake for the past five days. The longest amount of time I've been awake at once has been eight days. I ended that by practically just fainting on the hard wood kitchen floor, seeing as how I live by myself ( at the current time ) in my own house, I'd like to not wake up two days later lying on my kitchen floor. Is there any way I can help put myself to sleep earlier? Sleeping pills are not an option, due to a few of the many unbranded anti-depressive medicines I am currently taking to keep myself balanced. My usual sleeping method is by listening to my favorite music, but it isn't working. Can someone help?

Answer: Not sure if you have a medical condition that is causing your insomnia or not...might consult a physician and be refered to a sleep lab for professional help. Besides that I can offer some tips I've learned which have helped me over the years:1) Try eating/drinking a little bit before going to bed. Avoid meat and try to consume carbohydrates. A few beers could help you to relax.2) Take a hot bath or get a massage. This helps to relax your muscles.3) Wind down before going to bed, i.e. no exercise the last few hours before sleeping.4) Avoid mental puzzles, like crosswords or Sudoku, or dwelling on stressful issues. Instead think of pleasant/calm things, environments, people.5) Read.6) Breathing exercises, breath deeply and let it out slowly and naturally many times.7) Make the room you sleep in cooler, it is usually easier to fall asleep and stay asleep in a colder environment.8) You might need a new or different bed.9) If you toss and turn a lot while trying to fall asleep then try to lie still for an extened period of time. I've learned that even if I can't sleep but lie still for many hours I can still feel somewhat refreshed.10) Go to bed earlier. A sleep cycle lasts about an hour and a half and you need about four of these (6-8 hours) every night for optimal health.11) Make your room darker, cooler, quieter if you sleep during the day time.12) Exercise more...in the mornings.13) Lose weight. Some people with sleep apnea can attribute it to being overweight.14) Melatonin (sp) can be purchased over-the-counter at most health/nutrition stores.
