Question: Does the effect of sleeping pills lessen over time? What are some natural alternatives? It takes me about three hours to fall asleep, and I wake up spontaneously during the night. So I took half of a Unisom sleeping pill last night at about midnight, and I slept hard for twelve hours, right through my alarm. I still feel sleepy, like I could sleep for a whole day. That was the first time I'd ever used sleeping medication, so I'm wondering if this extreme effect will lessen if I continue to use it.Also, I'd like to know if there's a natural, healthy alternative to sleeping pills that won't "knock me out" like this.
Answer: yes, unisom, uses a simple antihistamine to make you sleepy, and it will leave you groggy, but those effects do diminish with time and eventually it will not work for you anymore. There are alot of good natural alternatives like, Valerian root, Kava kava, chamomile, and a number of other herbal products that aide in sleep without all the nasty side effects later. Check out your local supplement store.
