Question: Anyone try going off meds and have rebound insomnia?Hello, i have written about my insomnia before and im getting so fustrated because i still can't sleep. When my insomnia first started about 1 month & 2-3 weeks ago i tried ambien a few nights and didnt like it (only kept me asleep 3-5 hrs). Then i tried xanax and it worked for a little while then stopped.. i was on that for about 4 weeks, then tapered off and was on lunesta & trazodone for about 7-8 days and stopped taking them. So i was drug free for about 4 days and i could not sleep at all, i went 2 days no sleep at all, then the 3rd night i fell asleep finally without drugs, the night after that i couldnt sleep again at all, now last night i couldnt sleep and finally took a 1/2 a xanax and got to bed for a few hours. My question is, has anyone gone off these meds and had days of no sleep and is that normal? a rebound insomnia from going off the drugs? My body is so tired but it will not fall asleep for some reason. How long does this last... i'd like to do this drug free.
Answer: Personally I have never had sleep problems, but I have met a lot of patients who have...it sounds so frustrating!!! I think its awesome that you have been so open minded about trying so many things to help yourself...lifestyle changes and also medicines.Yes, rebound insomnia is very, very common after taking any of those medicines, especially if you took them for a while. AND especailly if you are already predisposed to insomnia from the getgo. Since you know that you have problems not only falling asleep, but staying asleep as well, make sure any meds you take in the future will help both. As you found out, ambien only helps you fall asleep. Ambien CR (controlled release) is supposed to be good for the all night sleep although I have not heard first hand any reports. Lunesta alone seems to work for a lot of people who have similar sleep problems to you. Trazodone is a very strong drug...there are lots of drugs that sould be tried before that one, especially in combo with another one. xanax is indicated in anxiety...are your sleep problems related to anxiety?? If not, xanax may just make you tired in general.
