Question: Are sleep aids safe?this is regarding my other post: how do you fall asleep earlier?http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...Anyway, I was wondering if over the counter sleep aids like Unisom and Tylenol's simply asleep are safe to take. the package says that it is safe and not habit forming, but I doubt that is the whole truth. It must be FDA approved and since its made by Tylenol I know they researched it and what not...however my dad doesnt think its a good idea. And I could get dependent upon a medicince, which I definetely don't want.I am a 16 year old male.
Answer: Over the counter drugs often, usually, stop you from reaching the full deep sleep that you need. There are 4 levels of sleep - Level 1 is that drowsy state you feel when you're falling asleep. Levels 2 and 3 are the dream state. Level 4 is the really deep sleep. In many ways Level 4 is the most important sleep - it's the first you make up when you've been sleep deprived.More importantly, it's the state where the Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is released from the brain. When you are deprived of that level of sleep for long times, you can stunt your growth. (That's one reason why children tend to sleep more when they're going through a growth spurt). So, safe or not from a narcotic point of view, they are not good for you, especially if you're still growing.
