Question: Is there any way to prevent sleep apnea?I suffer from sleep apnea because of my high blood pressure, is there any way to prevent it? because it scares the hell out of me.I am already taking losartan to control my hypertension, i am 29.
Answer: I'm not a doctor, so please don't take what I say for anything besides layman's advice. That said, here's what I suggest. My husband tends to have problems with both snoring and sleep apnea. What I've found helps him is sleeping on his side. I've read that somewhere, as well. If you find it hard to keep yourself sleeping on your side, it has been suggested that you can use a rubber band and a tennis ball and a t-shirt to fix the problem.Take the t-shirt, and place the tennis ball on the inside of the back of the shirt. Then, secure it in place with the rubber band. Ideally, the tennis ball should be in about the middle of your upper back when you put on the shirt. Such placement would make it uncomfortable to sleep on your back, forcing you to sleep on your sides. Ideally, it should eventually "train" you to sleep on your side, so you wouldn't always have to wear the tennis-ball-shirt to bed.The only other factor that I've heard can help sleep apnea is to loose weight. That is a factor that is individual to each person, and may or may not apply to you.
