Sleep Apnea In Children

Question: I need to know some information on child hood sleep apnea. also find a doctor that deals with it.?i have a neice that has sleep apnea and she doesn't want to use the cpap machine. what can we do.

Answer: 1. There are basically 2 types of surgeries. (actually more, but they all fall into 2 catagories)....the throat and nose surgury.2. MAKE SURE that you KNOW which one she needs FIRST!!!!!! If you are not SURE get multiple opinions FIRST.3. My doctor gave me the nose operation first, but he misdiagnosed me, and now I have to do the throat surgery. I think he misdiagnosed me intentionally because I SPECIFICALLY said that something like a "flap" keeps blocking my breathing. He should have known the it was the tissue that hangs in my throat because I T'OLD him that it blocks when I sleep on my back....PLUS I took the sleep study which is really a waste of $4000 bucks.4. Find out FIRST what the symptoms are.... ie, (does she have apnea after a hard day? does she have it when she sleeps on her side or back, etc) If you can do some monitoring and get the FACTS, you will save $4000 for the sleep study. Once you get the facts, ask around and find out what worked for other people with those symptoms.Yes, the fact finding is a hassel and could take time to gather the facts, but it's definitely better than paying $4000 for a sleep study which did me NO GOOD! The throat operation only cost about $2000 anyway, so I would have been better off taking my chances and just doing the throat operation without the study. Here is some good information on apnea. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/sleep-a...If you want to write me for more info, feel free to contact me....but really, all I can says is: 1- do not be lazy. Find out the symptoms first, BEFORE doing the surgery. 2- Get multiple opinions on which surgery she needs. 3- Ask around on which surgery worked for your niece's symptoms. This may take some time to find others who have had the exact same symptoms, but there ARE others who did. So do your homework as you are right now.
