Sleep Paralysis Disorder

Question: Sleep Paralysis???I suffer from horrible sleep paralysis. It happens once or twice a week and is accompanied by intense fear, and occasionally hallucinations. What I'm wondering is if it could have been caused by my bed-wetting as a small child. When I was 8 or 9 my parents got rid of my bed-wetting by using this machine (it was a mat that was put under my sheet, and when it detected moisture a really loud buzzer would go off and wake me up). It worked really well, I was cured within a week or two. But is it possible that the machine screwed up my normal sleep cycle? I've been reading alot of info about sleep paralysis and it says that people with some sort of sleep disorder are more prone to sleep paralysis. Has anyone else had an experience like mine, or know anything about it?

Answer: Sleep paralysis is common amoung people with narcolepsy as well as the hallucinations that you noted. The onset of sleep paralysis is usually during adolescence and typically increase during times of stress, but as stated before common with narcolepsy which related to REM sleep. Bed wetting is typically associated with delta sleep which is prominate in young children. From my experience with sleep disorder, I would suggest that you go to a sleep physician and get checked for narcolepsy.
