Question: Are there any disorders characterized by excess sleeping?Since I was 5 years old, I always slept a lot (still asleep after nap time in kindergarten). As the years progressed, I continued to have to take afternoon naps for about 2 hours a day. Now I am 19 and I find myself sleeping sometimes 14 to 16 hours at a time? Is there some type of disorder to go along with this?
Answer: Depression - kids as young as 2 can suffer from depression. Narcolepsy is a little different in that the person can be wide awake one minute, and zonk out the next. Unfortunately, this happens a lot when they're driving. You really should see a doctor. I know that teen agers sleep a lot because they are growing mentally and physically, as well as dealing with their hormones - but you should be past that.Just have a checkup for your own peace of mind.
